DESCRIPTION South Bridge Road, located in the heart of Chinatown, is one of the thriving city centres. This street is of historical importance as it served as one of the main thoroughfares linking the town and New Harbour (now called Keppel Harbour) and as a witness to the height of transportation development throughout the times, from the first steam tramway in 1886, electric trams in 1905 to trolleybuses in 1929. Formerly home to import and export businesses alike, it stretches south from Elgin Bridge to Maxwell Road, Tanjong Pagar Road, and Neil Road. The high traffic volume in this main street of Chinatown saw the rise of multi-storey shop houses which still exist today. The Chinese call the road ta ma lo or "great horseway" as well as chat bok koi or "paint wood street". The road is also known as gu chia chui tua be chia lo in Hokkien which means "big horse (carriage) road in Kreta Ayer Road". The Tamils refer to it as "kalapithi kadei sadakku" களப்பத்துக் கடை சடக்கு or "Cawker's Shop Street". With the street’s very rich history, one can find a handful of historical buildings and important landmarks along South Bridge Road. To name a few, we have Sri Mariamman Temple, Jamae Mosque, Central Police Station demolished in 1977 and replaced by the former Pidemco Centre in 1984, the Criminal District and Police Courts built in 1884 and torn down in 1975 and the Eu Yan Sang Building which housed the Eu Yan Sang traditional Chinese pharmacy. New developments that have surfaced include Fook Hai Building and Hong Lim Complex.
